Errors Rate in Interface Templates

Hi,

I am monitoring some routers and in the interface templates I have setup thresholds value for errros and discards at 5.0 % and rearm value at 4% for both. The ocurence it is setup at 3 times consecitively.

Whe I go in the dashboard of an interface on the right side i see a graphic with errors and discards. There I can see the errors in and out, discard in and out. On the graphic these are as a number 10, 12, 64, etc. (picture ENP-6726.jpg).

If from the dashboard of the interface I click on the ERRORS / DISCARDS monitors in the left side (under Monitors) I get a different graphic (ENP-6728.jpg). In this one it looks to be expressed in percents and it is the same in the table below the graph (Discards Rate).

I'm interested how should I interpret these different information? Whan I setup in the Interface Template the 5 % what does it mean: 5% of errors from the total bandwidth of the interface or from the traffic being generated in that moment?

Thanks and Regards,

Razvan Despa

Hi Razvan Despa,

Errors and Discards Report in right side of interface snapshot page shows the no. of received and transmitted packets with errors and no.of received and transmitted discarded packets where as the Errors report in left hand side of Interface snapshot page shows the rate of total errors (in percentage)  and rate of total discards (in percentage) with respect to total packets through the interface.

Configure the thresholds for Errors and Discards based on Errors rate and Discards rate reports.Hope this helps.

With Regards,

Purnima.

Hi,

I was checking more in deept why i receive a lot of notifications even if the Errors Rate is setup to 5 % and for 1 or 2 errors (absolute value) I got the threshold violated message. The answer is because the monitor for Packets per Second is not getting any info. So 1 error received versus o packets transferred means more then 100% so threshold is violated. In reality there is traffic over that interface. The errors in absolute valua are very low. I have attached some screenshots of these graphics of the same interface in the same period of time.

I have noticed this now for multiple routers added in the last 2 months. On other router (same model) the packets per second is working fine so the threshold is calculated properly.

Do you have any idea what to check and modify so that the number packets get qeried and displayed properly?

Thanks and Regards,

Hi Razvan Despa,

Please take screen shot of Errors report in left hand side of Interface snapshot page as well as Threshold configure page for the particular Interface and  send the details to support at opmanager dot com with reference to this forum post. We will analyze the issue and get back to you as early as possible.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi,

As last week i was flooded with emails of error threshold excedded on this interface I have disabled the Threshold for errors rate for this type of interface on all the routers. But I was able to take out a report of last week Errors Rate whwre it is showing the 100% errors rate. During this time (also now) there are no packets reported on that interface so 1 error versus 0 packets measured means over 5% (threshold) so the ALLARMs.

Attached the Errors and Discards in absolute, packets counted and Errors rate for last week on the same interface.

I will send another picture in a second post as i cannot upload more then 3 attachments (6980) of the last week report of Packets per second of a similar interface of another router (added 5-6 months ago) where this is working so the Threshold Errors Rate is working as it should be.

Thanks a lot for investigations conducted.

Regards,
Razvan Despa
