Maintenance of Additional Fields

Maintenance of Additional Fields

Our Additional Fields for Incident and Service Templates is growing and are difficult to manage...how about yours?!

I would like to see the following funcitonalities added:

  • Ability to enable/disable additional fields.   Currently you can delete them, but that deletes your history and really messes with your filters and all associated field rules.  There comes a time when that field is no longer relevant, but you don't want to delete it because it affects the current template and/or history.   If disabled, we don't want to see it in the available field list when creating a template.
  • Ability to add (shared) to a field created before you could share fields between the types of templates.  Now if I need the same field name for a new Service Request that was previously created for an Incident Request and I can't use the same name.  This makes me have to edit reports, queries, etc. in order to add another field name when one would suffice.
  • Ability to sort (order) the available additional fields when creating a new Incident or Service template.   Having to look at a list of 30+ fields lend itself to oversight and the creation of another field when one actually exists.
  • When renaming an additional field, allow the name change to pass through to the already existing templates.  Do not remove it as it breaks the rules associated with the fields when the field is removed from the template.   Then all parts of the template(s) have to be reconfigured.   It is necessary to make changes to the field names occasionally.
  • Ability to see "Where Used".   Would like to be able to see on which templates the field is being used.   So, when maintaining fields we can easily see the extent of any changes.  This could be a report or a field added to the Additional Fields table.  Whatever is easiest and most flexible.
If any of these are currently available, please advise...I havent' found it yet and could really use it.  I'm redesigning some templates and am running into these issues quite frequently.
