When I deploy Java 7 update 7 to my 32bit computer the install is successful but when I try to deploy it to my 64bit machines I get an error message about the "Installation package could not be opened".
I trust you are using Software Deployment module to deploy Java. (Actually, i presumed it as Patch Management).
When you initiate the Java 64 bit package installation
It extracts the contents to 'syswow64' instead of
regular 'System32' or 'temp' folder. This is true when the deployment of the package is using the System Account. (By default, Desktop Central install the application in this account) This behavior can be handled using
the 'Run As' option available in Desktop Central Software Deployment.
Please give a try and update. (Patch Management module has this handling by default i trust)

Yes, I was deploying it using the Software Deployment module because Patch Management was not updating although I recently upgraded to the newest version so that may have been the reason Patch Management wasn;t working.
I have the configuration set to "Run as" domain admin. I will let you know the results.
